International Women’s Day celebrated at Carmel School Perth
Posted: 3 April 2012WIZO celebrated International Women’s Day with an assembly at Carmel High School.
The students were introduced to the issues affecting women in the world today such as domestic violence, homelessness and other forms of abuse. Through various videos, the girls were shown how WIZO in Israel helps these women and that girls here can help fix these issues through individual responsibility. With a montage of footage taken from women throughout our own community, it became clear that the only way to make a real difference to the lives of Israeli women and children is to take action by supporting WIZO. The girls enjoyed cupcakes with W on them to celebrate women and WIZO.
WIZO AVIVA AGM
Posted: 19 December 2011The WIZO Aviva AGM was a delightful evening. The highlight was our guest speaker, Jenny Maughan and her ‘friends’. Jenny is a social worker who uses puppetry and magnificent characters as therapy for damaged, abused, bullied and grief-stricken children. She gave us the most enlightening, educational and entertaining overview of the work she does. What an incredible passion and talent !
Wizo Aviva has had a most successful year: financially, socially, and with membership numbers. We appreciate that we have a membership list of around 100, but we’d love to see more of these ladies at meetings in 2012.
There are not enough words with which to thank Estelle Lin for her wonderful work as President, capably assisted by Heather Kur, but they have made an act so hard to follow, that we presently do not have anyone willing to fill the position for next year. The rest of the positions are:
Sandi Leigh Treasurer
Di Adonis Secretary
Judith Hirschfield Membership
Donnelle Rockman Publicity
Barbara Arenson Education
Todah Certificates were presented to Ilana Klevansky, Barbara Arenson and Heather Kur for outstanding efforts in various areas, and special thanks go to Irene Dembo and her team, for their efficient and ongoing hard work catering Ora meetings.
2011 AVIVA LYNNE GOODMAN FAREWELL
Posted: 21 September 2011The WIZO Aviva farewell morning for Lynne Goodman was a truly delightful event. Huge thanks to Vicki and Lionel King, who warmly welcomed a large crowd of Lynne and Marcel’s friends into their spectacular new home, and helped the Wizo Aviva ladies in serving a sumptuous kosher brunch. Lynne was presented with a Wizo ‘Sponsor a Child’ certificate for money donated to Israel. Again, thanks to Estelle Lin and Heather Kur, our tireless movers and shakers. Lynne and Marcel: good luck in the next chapter of your life with your family in Israel. Perth will surely miss you.
MONDAY MORNING COOKING CLUB HITS WIZO IN PERTH
Posted: 20 September 2011Move over Master Chef, the Monday Morning Cooking Club sisterhood showed how it’s done.
Merelyn Frank Chalmers and Lisa Goldberg came to Perth to launch their publication in the wider community and demonstrate some of the wonderful recipes in their recently published book. This book, the culmination of many years of trying, tasting, cooking and baking, salutes the generations of cooks who have handed down wonderful recipes.
At a morning tea at the home of Jessica Karotkin, Lisa and Merelyn showed their version of the traditional honey cake and many other delicacies such as mamoul, kinlech and cinnamon buns. The guests enjoyed tasting the delicious treats and chatting over coffee after the presentation.
It was then off to the Iain Lawless Cooking School for chopping, cutting, cooking and laughing which marked an afternoon of preparation for an evening presentation to a packed house. As they demonstrated the finer points of the recipes, guests made notes, saw how foods change during the cooking process and learned many handy hints.
Lisa and Merelyn are true professionals and their generosity in giving all the proceeds of the book to WIZO makes it even more remarkable.
WIZO WA Annual General Meeting March 2011
Posted: 23 June 2011At the WIZO Western Australia’s Annual General Meeting, a special honour was conferred upon Vivienne Levin for her devotion to WIZO and outstanding community service. Through the generosity of her family and the members of WIZO Aviva, a “charcoal” brick was laid, in her name, in Ahuzat Yeladim’s “Road of Hope”. It is a fitting tribute to someone who has given so much to WIZO.
